B.C.’s farm land appreciated more than 8 percent in value during the 2nd half of 2006 according to FCC (Farm Credit Canada). The first half of the year saw a 10% increase. Farm land in the Fraser Valley is the most fertile & most valuable in the province. Small family farms are selling for over $80000 per acre. Higher crop prices in the recent years are believed to be the major factor in rising farm land prices. Our cities are growing at a record pace and there is lots of development pressure on our farmland, thats another reason for rising prices. Unlike other provinces BC farm land is protected from development by the ALR (Agricultural Land Reserve).
